Film, television, and stage actor Daniel Sunjata was raised in Chicago. After completing his undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Sunjata attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and acquired a Master of Fine Arts from its Graduate Acting Program.
In 1998, Daniel Sunjata made his first appearance on Broadway as Valentine in William Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night, or What You Will. Over the next few years, he held parts in the television shows D.C., All My Children, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Sex and the City. During this period, Daniel Sunjata was featured in the Anthony Hopkins/Chris Rock action comedy Bad Company and Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda.
Five years after Twelfth Night, Daniel Sunjata returned to the stage in the award-winning play Take Me Out. Written by Richard Greenberg, Take Me Out tells the story of Darren Lemming, a gay baseball player who comes out of the closet. Sunjata starred in the role of Lemming for nearly a year, won a 2003 Theatre World Award, and was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award.
Soon thereafter, Daniel Sunjata was cast in Denis Leary's firefighter drama Rescue Me as Franco Rivera. The show dealt with the aftermath of 9/11 on a New York City firehouse and ran on FX from 2004 to 2011. A subplot involving Sunjata's character featured him questioning the origins of the attacks on the World Trade Center, and he narrated Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup, which dealt with similar issues.
Throughout the run of Rescue Me, Daniel Sunjata received parts in Law & Order, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, 30 Rock, and The Devil Wears Prada. In 2007 and 2008, he also starred as Christian de Neuvillette in a revival of Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway. In 2012, Sunjata will appear in One for the Money, Gone, and The Dark Knight Rises.
